Spring Series #11 & 12
Thanks go to Nigel Stratham for putting together the results through out the year.
The last 2 races of the Spring Series were run last Sunday with a small fleet enjoying pre-sailing banter amidst the drizzle. It seems the forecast kept most sailors in front of the TV instead of at the lake, and maybe they had the right idea? Just ten sailors lined up in eight boats on the starting line. I was glad I put wet weather gear on.
Early in the day we had a few showers and some very nice breezes from the north and we were all looking forward to a damp but exciting sail…. Alas, the wind dropped out and moved east by the time we reached C mark so we had a shortened course. Very tough conditions, with the wind direction switching just when you didn’t want it to. Some twit managed to get tangled in the shore weeds twice and almost run aground 2 metres before the finish line. Both races ended up shortened and despite the inclement weather, I think we were all glad we had made the effort.
The fleet consisted of 2 Taipans, 2 N5.8s, Windrush, Maricat, ILCA, and a Tornado classic.
Thanks heaps to our outgoing Commodore, Paul Rowell, who is looking forward to getting to sail soon as he has been on Race Control for months, and the wonderful volunteers on the Safety Boat, the ever reliable Rob Plenderleith and Steve Cummings joining him. John Westbury was on Race Control with Paul learning the ropes. Good on you John.
A notable feature of the day's races was the lead changes between a Taipan 4.9 and the Tornado, with the latter making the most of their spinnaker. Ultimately, the Taipan managed to prevail in the unpredictable weather.
We really need a new commodore for the rest of the year as Paul has now retired, so please put you hand up to be nominated before the AGM this Saturday 22nd. Hope to see you all there.
