Spring Series Races 3 & 4

Spring Series Races 3 and 4, 18th October 2026

The Lake Samsonvale Water Sports Association's Spring Series races 3 and 4 took place under challenging conditions on the 18th of October, 2026. Despite the grim weather forecast, a dedicated group of sailors participated, demonstrating resilience and skill.

Weather Conditions

The day was characterized by grey, overcast skies, with rain making an appearance during the rigging phase. Fortunately, the rain ceased before the races started, although a strong and gusty breeze before the races discouraged some boats from participating. The fleet comprised a mix of monohulls, trimarans, and catamarans, ready to tackle the unpredictable conditions of Lake Samsonvale.

Race 3 commenced with virtually no wind, posing a significant challenge to the competitors. As the race progressed, the wind picked up to approximately 10 knots for the first half of the lap but gradually diminished, resulting in a near drift by the finish line. In Division D, the competition was fierce, particularly between the 'A' class and the Tornado. Both boats swapped the lead multiple times during the last lap, with the Tornado momentarily losing its way. The course was shortened after three laps, culminating in a thrilling finish. The 'A' class narrowly edged out the Tornado, running aground as it crossed the line to secure victory. I'm sure the other Divisions had their own battles.

By the time Race 4 began, the fleet had dwindled, with many opting not to start due to the light winds just ten minutes before the race. However, the sailors who persevered were rewarded with a consistent 10 to 12 knot breeze throughout the race. This unexpected turn of events provided a satisfying experience for those who chose to compete, leaving the non-starters to regret their decision.
