Marathon #3
Beautiful day forecast but alas very little wind. Possibly due to the forecast, school holidays and it being Easter Sunday, the fleet was rather small for the last Marathon of the season, with just 10 Skippers taking to the water. Paul/W14, Jeremy/W14, Ferdinand/H14., Steve/Weta, Loch/A-Class and Steve/Taipan 4.9. 3 Great to see three O’pen Skiffs join in the racing, all skippers from our Learn-to-Sail Program, with Alexa, Lachlan and Bill doing a great job getting round the course, some for the first time, and David and Edward sailing a 420 doing a good job in the light conditions.
It was difficult sailing with the fickle winds and when the occasional breeze did come in, it was bound to give you a knock just when you didn’t want one.
Tim set a short course with timed laps, which worked well as we managed around 4 circuits. Steve on his Taipan dropped out early and headed for somewhere more sensible and Loch staying out there doing a couple more late ones as the afternoon breeze picked up, getting him out on trap at last. They had to they drag him off the course, screaming ‘just one more'!’ The rest of us were stuffed and packed it in earlier.
Thanks to Lyssa and Haylee for looking after the start and time keeping, and to Rob and Tim for running the safety boat. Patrick and friend also ran the smaller safety boat to look after the young skippers in the Open Skiffs.
Everyone was happy to get ashore and grab a drink to finish off the day. Challenging, but still a lovely day out.
