2026 New Year’s Regatta
This report is by Lydia, one of our youngest skippers. She moved from racing Open Bics to a Nacra 350 in this Regatta for the first time!
This weekend was our annual New Years Regatta, and the conditions were challenging. It was a fantastic turn out for our club with 41 boats registered and an impressive representation of Nacra 4.5s, Taipans and A class catamarans with some great competition regardless of the inconsistent weather conditions.
The first day started with light winds for race one, but it picked up for the second and third races which made it a lot more fun and competitive.
Day 2 tested us all with the hot sun and no breeze. Race four was torture, taking over an hour to finish. During the race a couple of sailors suffered from heat exhaustion, so the rest of the races were abandoned for safety and there were no complaints from anyone.
The clubs two new Nacra 350s had their maiden sail and it was a lot of fun to have some friendly competition.
It was great to have the Moore family from Harvey Bay back again and who once more took out first place of 14 boats in D division on Los Moros. The other first places went to Dave Cue in C Division, Craig Gray in B division, Lachie Lys in N division and Angela Cook T division. It was also nice to see two open skiffs join the competition on day two who ended up taking line honours😊
With only three capsizes altogether and the heat stroke sailors recovered, it was a really good weekend.
Thank you to all sailors that came from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast and everywhere in between and of course LSWSA members for making the weekend such a good one. And thank you very much to the group of volunteers for all their planning, coordination and work for us all to have an opportunity to get out on the water at Lake Samsonvale.
