The 'Gemini Girl' Story

Mild modification.

Hailing from Noosa, Dave and Elaine’s W600 is fairly close to a standard narrow version, except that replacement of the rig has ‘lost’ the original Sail #.

A complete transplant from a Nacra 5.2 has matched the vessel very well. The mast appears to be a fraction shorter, but extra roach in the mainsail would give more drive in lighter winds, and the performance seems to be comparable with the standard rig. The mainsail has been attached to the mast with track slides at each batten end ‘big boat style’, which allows the sail to be dropped very easily onto the boom, guided by lazy-jacks.

Dave is not sure about this boat’s history, or who modified the rig, but there was a whisper that it spent some time in the Whitsundays. This tallies with another rumour about a W600 that regularly sailed he Whitsundays, we’ll find out some day!

Not really visible in these photos is a very workmanlike modification to the rear beam, which will be covered in the hardware pages. This effectively ‘doubles up’ the beam, giving much more stable attachment for the outboard, plus a boarding ladder and loading platform. Combined with this is an athwartship storage compartment and seat, which allows all the miscellaneous sailing gear to be kept out of the mail hulls.

Here is ‘Gemini Girl’ at a recent club cruise, with ‘Retail Therapy’ in the background.
