Bob Rankin purchased the pictured Smartkat from Andrew Freeman in Feb 2010, who was the then Qld sales agent for Smartkat. Andrew visited our club during the regatta of Jan 2010 with his family and enjoyed sailing one-up in the three races of Saturday. He admitted it was a learning curve for himself having only usually sailed with his family socially. By the third race Andrew was seen blasting around the course giving some rivals a check-up.

Bob Rankin joined Andrew at the end of racing for a sail not expecting too much speed being two-up, but was pleasantly surprised with the speed and was further excited to feel a huge surge of speed when sailing through a stronger gust. In fact the beauty of this craft is that it revels in stronger winds sailing two-up. An ambitious sailor can sail the Smartkat on one hull and it is suitable for racing in regattas.

The deep centreboard and rudder located centrally allow for good pointing and tacking ability. A clever design allows for both centreboard and rudder to kick up automatically if beaching at speed or if in shallow waters, preventing damage.

The Smartkat comes in 2 bags which may fit in the rear of some vehicles, or on roof racks, with each bag weighing just over 20 kilos. This craft may be an option for sailors that don’t have the room to store a traditional rig nor wish to tow a trailer.

Until a Qld agent has been re-appointed, contact the Australian distributor, Anil Patel at anil@ozsmartkat.com.au

Alternatively, catch up with Bob Rankin, (Ph 0416 294 996) who now owns the pictured Smartkat and is enjoying sailing/racing at the lake when possible.
