Peter McQuoid commenced sail training courses in May 2009. Since that time, graduates from his first Basic Skills course have moved on to more advanced levels, and in the future will be competing in Junior club events. Classes are based on a Yachting Australia syllabus, and combine theory, practice and having fun. Strong support from parents is required, and families of our Junior sailors have become very active in the LSWSA structure. The vessel of choice is the Sabot (below) Families do not necessarily need a vessel. Students are 'paired-up' in our existing fleet, and most of the course theory components are presented to the whole group. However, this sets a limit to the size of our classes, and there is sometimes a waiting list. As a result, LSWSA parents have just about cornered-the-market in second-hand Sabots, and our class sizes are expanding as more boats are available.

The basic training area is in a handy sheltered bay adjacent to the east of the clubhouse ... 'Pirates' Cove' ... which is away from strong winds and not visited by the senior racing fleets. The club has commissioned a second safety boat which is dedicated to the Junior fleet, and which is on the water whenever courses are held. This safety boat is crewed by parent volunteers, and used for coaching purposes as well as its primary task of rescue in the case of an emergency. Kids, it's good fun to learn to sail with a group of friends.
